Description

The Mystery of the Goatskin Treasure Map is Historical Fiction…and, it’s a mystery! Based on a Historical event known as the Lost Spanish Fleet of 1715 when a fleet of 10 Galleons and merchant ships were sent to comb the new world and fill their holds with gold, silver, Inca jewelry and all manner of trade goods. Spain, nearly broke, needed to replenish its treasury.

The ten ships left Havana Harbor headed for Spain, carrying more than 2000 men, women, and children as they sailed through the Florida Straits and onto the coast of Florida when a fierce hurricane pushed them onto the reefs between Fort Pierce Beach and Vero Beach, leaving over 1000 dead while spilling their treasure all along the reefs and beaches. Only half of their treasure has ever been found, the rest is still out there!

The basis for the mystery is a very old treasure map made from goatskin found at the Fort Pierce inlet. It appears to point to a buried treasure somewhere between Fort Pierce Beach and Sebastian, not the treasure lost in the sea. But the words printed on the goatskin are written in an unknown language, not any well-known language. Without knowing what they say, there’s no way to find the treasure.

The story takes place in 1959 and, as you might suspect, there’s also a love story to keep things interesting. As an aside, all that lost treasure left by the Lost Spanish Fleet is why this part of Florida became known as the Treasure Coast!
