Word Book Day

Books can transport, us through the vehicle of our imaginations, educate us on subjects new to us or familiar, and enliven our lives in a way that neither TV nor movies (nor even the stage plays I love) can.

For us writers, books are an outlet for our creativity, a means of expressing ourselves, and for those of us who write nonfiction, a way to share our knowledge with the rest of the world.

Books are the key to a magic kingdom—in fact, books are magical themselves.

As a child, I read for hours on end. And if you have a child, there is no better gift you can give him or her than to instill in him a love of reading. It will help him immeasurably with her school studies now and with the world at large as she grows older.

For us writers, writing a book can be even more pleasurable than reading one. Yes, it’s work, and yes, sometimes it can be frustrating, and no, the job isn’t finished when the book is written—after the book is published comes the dreaded task of publicizing it, which few writers indeed enjoy. But still, we write because overall we love it and, what’s more, we NEED to write like we need to eat and sleep and breathe.

Do you have a favorite author, or just one whose work you particularly enjoy? Most writers have websites with contact links—send him or her an email saying how much you enjoy his/her writing. He/she will appreciate it!

Let’s hear it for us writers! Let’s hear it for books!
