Graduation day is coming…and these days, not only high schools and colleges but also middle schools, elementary schools, and yes, even pre-schools hold graduations. The other day, when I was talking to someone in administration at a pre-school, she said, “This is a busy time of year for us. We’re getting ready for graduation and prom.
Prom?!Yes. Nowadays many pre-schools have not only graduations but proms. But I digress—as usual. We were talking about graduation.
Do you know someone who is graduating this year, from any level of schooling? If it’s a very close relative and a significant graduation—high school or college—you may need to opt for a more substantial gift. But otherwise, if it’s not a very close relative and/or it’s simply a graduation from sixth or eigth grade, pre-school or kindergarten, you don’t need to spend a ton of money. But figuring out what to get the graduate may be a challenge—especially if you don’t know his or her size, or his or her tastes.
How about a book (or two or three)?
You knew I was going to say that, didn’t you?
Books are excellent gifts for any occasion—not just graduations, but Father’s Day, birthdays, and other times when gift-giving is appropriate.
For a new college grad, how about a book (or two) on a subject related to the field of endeavor he or she is aiming at.
If he or she is planning to start his/her own business, there are plenty of books out there that are suited to aspiring entrepreneurs.
For a new high school grad, how about a reference book he/she is sure to use often in his/her college studies.
Or consider something totally non-intellectual and escapist, to relax with over the summer before he/she gets down to the “heavy lifting” that is college. This could be anything from a novel to a puzzle book to a book of humor.
For the middle school grad, either a “YA” (Young Adult) novel or a self-help book for teens, to help with one of the many problems that cause teen angst.
For the elementary school grad, either a novel suited to his/her age or nonfiction on a subject he/she is interested in, from dinosaurs to geology (rocks) to pop music to animals.
For the pre-school or kindergarten grad, an easy reader.
For a Father’s Day gift, how about either a book about a distant city or foreign country he has expressed curiosity about, or a book about one of his hobbies? Fishing? Golf? Bodybuilding? Basketball? If he’s a sedentary type, more inclined to watch TV than do anything active, how about a book about his favorite sport, his favorite team, classic TV, or old movies?
For someone who has a birthday (or other occasion to celebrate), anything from a book about one of his/her interests to a novel to a book of humorous essays or stories to a book filled with crossword puzzles.
One size fits all. No assembly required. No batteries needed. You don’t have to know much about the gift recipient besides what his/her interests are.
A book—the perfect gift…for any occasion.
